What is Blood Jewelry?

2 min read

Blood is the essence of life. We swear blood oaths to symbolize deeply held commitments, or become "blood brothers" to represent a bond that can never be broken. When you carry the blood of a loved one with you, it represents a magical bond between two souls. Because of this, blood vial jewelry has become increasingly popular.

But carrying the blood of a loved one isn’t a new trend. Who can forget Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie’s blood pendants back in the 90s? Or more recently Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly trading blood jewelry?

What to Look For

If you’re interested in blood vial jewelry, there are a few things you need to consider.

First, make sure that you select vials that seal tightly. Remember, blood is considered a biohazard, so leakage can be dangerous.

Second, as with water or other fluids, you’ll also want to make sure that you use adhesive (ideally an epoxy) whensealing your pendant or jewelry, to ensure a leak-proof seal.

Third, the vial materials matter. You’ll want to look for something that is either stainless steel or glass. Avoid vials that have cork stoppers.

You’ll also want to ensure that you have preserved it correctly, using an anticoagulant, alcohol, or other preservatives. Remember, unlike hair, ashes, or other memorial keepsakes, blood can decompose or coagulate. If you have a clear vial, you’ll probably want to ensure that the blood stays fluid.

There are some anticoagulants that can be used such as heparin or a chemical like EDTA that will preserve the blood, though you may need a prescription or to acquire them from a pharmacy. Formaldehyde can also be used, but it will turn the blood a brown color.
